Well done to our three Year 12 students who successfully completed a 5 day Clinical Skills course at Biograd in May half term working with REAL Scientists and Clinicians receiving top class lab training. The students Jadyn Santana Correia,, Philip Obosuo Bediako Kakari and Steven Agugua worked with a mixed group of students (UK and international) in the intensive clinical and laboratory experience working with qualified medics and research scientists.
During the programme they worked in the lab for 1.5 days performing blood typing and also learning to perform an ELISA for the detection of a primary antibody using control samples.
They spent a day and a half in the respiratory clinic, learning how to perform a head to toe respiratory examinations which included spirometry, listening to lung sounds, performing peak flow assessments and taking patient history and n the cardiac assessment clinic they performed manual blood pressure assessments, ECG’s and cardiac rehabilitation exercises on a range of patients in the setting of cardiac rehabilitation.
Finally, our young scientists then spent a day and a half in the laboratory learning more about the lab component of medical research, undertaking blood typing for a blood transfusion and performing their own ELISA tests.
Dr Natalie Kenny the Director and Chief Scientific Officer at BioGrad.gave some great feedback about our students. Dr Kenny has many years experience in toxicology, in-vitro pharmacology, molecular biology and translational medicine and she has recently welcomed the Academy of St Nicholas and All Saints Sixth Form College as a Biograd partner school.
